The good news is "YES"! As we’ve learned in previous lessons, whenever God tells us what NOT to do, He gives us something to put into its place. It’s called the "replacement theory". We will never be able to overcome a "good-for-nothing" habit, if we focus on getting rid of it. In other words, we can’t focus on the ‘put-off’, instead we must focus our minds on the ‘put-on’ for the glory of the Lord. Spiritual growth requires thinking on the good the Lord desires to accomplish in us, even in difficult times.

The Bible says in Colossians 3:23:

"And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."

You won’t be doing it to make yourself look better, but to submit your will to the Lord Jesus Christ, confessing your weakness in this area and choosing to obey Him just because of His love for you. He will then change your desire, so you will no longer WANT to live in the old area that was so debilitating. He will also give you the power to re-focus your thinking on His goodness.

Let’s look at a few ideas of how your thinking can change if you submit your mind to the will of Jesus and focus on His plan for you.

Replace this thought . . . With This . . .

"I’m not sure I’ll make the right decision"

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your mind.
"What will people think of me…" 2 Timothy 1:7 The Lord has not given me a spirit of timidity, but power, love, sound mind
"What if my son wrecks his car." Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t be anxious; pray with thanksgiving to God; peace will guard you.
"I'm afraid I won't make it to my destination." Psalm 23:4 I will fear no evil for God is with me.
"Everyone is against me" Psalm 27:1 The Lord is the strength of my life.
"Everything is falling apart…"

"I'm not sure my check will stretch to the end of the month. What will I do?"

Psalm 91:4-5 The Lord is my shield and buckler; I will not fear the terror of night…

Phil 4:12, 19 Know how to get along with humble means. God supplies my needs.

What can you expect when you put your problems into God’s hands? You can trust Him with your burdens (see Psalm 68:19). Trust (believing) is the basic foundational principle for overcoming the "big 3" - anxiety, fear and worry. We have been promised in Psalm 138:8;

"The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;..."

Overcoming is only possible by putting God's plan into practice. The last link will give you some ideas on doing just that.
