"The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him’." (Genesis 2:18)

"So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’, for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Genesis 2:21-24)

Here we see words like: "one flesh" and "united". These indicate a true spirit of unity. No one is truly united if their minds and hearts if their minds and hearts are devoted to something or some-one else. But this "one flesh unity" involves LOVE…a special kind of God love!

Since WE (men and women) already profess a faith in God, then we are "from God" and "God is love" (see 1 John 4:4-12). It makes perfect sense that God would expect us to follow His example of love. So what was that example?

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her…In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife love himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church….for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh….This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." (Ephesians 5:25, 28-29, 31-33)

Since the woman was made from the side of the man (Adam), it’s logical that God would put a heavier responsibility on the man to LOVE his wife in the same way that God loves. After all "man" is to be a representation of Jesus Christ on this earth, and Jesus loved! All man’s dealings with people are to exemplify the character of his Lord.

The woman is to be a representation of the church. In her thoughts, words and actions she is to exemplify purity and virtue. She was created to RESPECT her husband. In the same way as Jesus is the "husband" of the true Church on earth and the church respects and submits to Him, so the woman will respond to her own husband.
